Daniel promised he understood, so I trusted him.
Unfortunately, the cake incident showed that we still had something important to discuss.
My Father’s Quiet Intervention
As I reached for another napkin, I noticed my father walking toward us. He had always been a calm person who preferred thoughtful conversations to public arguments.
He looked at me first and gently asked whether I was okay.
Then he turned to Daniel.
“Didn’t Emily ask you not to do something like this?” he asked.
Daniel attempted to laugh it off, explaining that he had only intended to make everyone laugh.
My father listened before responding.
“If someone tells you that something will upset them, you should take that seriously. A joke is only enjoyable when people can genuinely share in the laughter.”
His words were simple, but the atmosphere around us changed. Some guests looked away, while others quietly returned to their conversations.
