What Daniel had not considered was that my father had witnessed the entire incident.
A Pattern I Had Tried to Overlook
Before our wedding, Daniel could be charming and generous. However, his sense of humor sometimes came at my expense. He would share personal stories without asking or make jokes that left me uncomfortable in front of others.
I often stayed quiet because I did not want to create an argument. Over time, though, I began to realize that avoiding disagreements was not the same as resolving them.
I had also seen similar behavior in Daniel’s family. His father frequently teased his mother in front of relatives, dismissing her concerns whenever she asked him to stop. I worried that Daniel might eventually treat that behavior as normal in our own marriage.
That was why I had spoken to him repeatedly before our wedding. I wanted a relationship where we could laugh together without either person feeling disrespected.
