He still expected me to make everyone comfortable.

This time, I didn’t.

“Sit down, Wade.”

Eventually, he did.

Graham spoke first.

“When you refused to kiss Mom this morning, you embarrassed her. And when she told you she was hurt, you blamed her.”

Wade rubbed his forehead.

“Oh, come on.”

“I made a comment about some facial hair,” he protested.

Tobin leaned forward.

“You called it disgusting.”

“Are we seriously going to repeat every word?”

“Yes,” I answered.

Wade turned toward me.

“Why?”

“Because you keep calling it a joke. I want you to hear what you actually said.”

His jaw tightened.

“This is between your mother and me.”

“No,” Graham replied. “You said it in front of us.”

Wade stared at him.

“I’m your father. Show some respect.”

“I am. I’m telling you the truth instead of pretending everything’s fine.”

Wade pushed his chair back.
