“So game night is a family meeting where everybody criticizes me?”
Tobin glanced at the pizza.
“We asked you home early because we knew you’d come for the game.”
“And?”
“We didn’t think you’d come if we said we wanted to talk about Mom.”
Wade opened his mouth, then closed it.
For the first time, he seemed to understand.
The boys weren’t playing a prank. They had given up an evening they normally loved because they couldn’t pretend breakfast hadn’t happened.
Wade turned to Graham.
“You’re 21. You think you understand marriage?”
“No,” Graham said. “That’s what worries me.”
He told his father about the argument with his girlfriend, about calling her too sensitive, and about recognizing Wade’s response in his own words.
Wade frowned.
“You’re blaming me for something you said?”
“No. I was responsible for it. That’s why I apologized.”
