I typed, They’ll be happy you’re home.
Then I deleted it.
See you soon.
Graham and Tobin arrived 20 minutes before their father. Tobin carried pizza, and Graham set paper plates on the counter.
The television stayed off.
“Are you sure about this?” I asked.
Graham looked at me.
“Are you?”
I thought of the mirror, the blue dress, and my son hearing his father’s words come out of his own mouth.
“Yes.”
When Wade arrived, he was cheerful.
“Where are my favorite sports fans?”
He noticed the pizza.
“Perfect.”
Then he saw the dark television.
“Game hasn’t started?”
“Dad,” Graham said, “we need to talk first.”
Wade looked between them.
“About what?”
“Breakfast.”
His smile disappeared.
“You’ve got to be kidding.”
He turned to me.
“Maren, did you put them up to this?”
“No.”
“Then tell them to stop making a big deal out of a joke.”
