I tried not to think about what would happen when we returned home.
We even took a photograph together in the swimming pool, both smiling as though we were the happiest people in the world.
But on the third day of our vacation, Daniel started calling.
At first, twice a day. Then dozens of times.
George refused to answer.
On the seventh day, our son sent one short message.
“We know what you’ve done. When you get home, we need to have a serious conversation.”
My husband read it and laughed.
“They’ll be angry for a few days, then forget about it. We’re their parents, after all.”
I wanted to believe him.
But when we returned on the tenth day, Daniel, Sarah, and our two grandchildren were waiting near the front gate.
Nobody smiled.
Daniel didn’t even approach us for a hug.
Instead, he looked at his father and spoke quietly.
