One evening, my husband made an unexpected suggestion.
“Mary, we’ve spent our entire lives working. I’m over seventy now. Don’t we deserve to enjoy ourselves at least once?”
I told him our pensions couldn’t possibly cover an expensive vacation.
George smiled casually.
“There’s money. Daniel is still young. He can work and earn it all back.”
When I realized which money he was talking about, I was horrified.
“George, that’s our children’s savings! We have absolutely no right to touch that money!”
But he spoke so convincingly that I gradually began justifying his decision myself.
We convinced ourselves that we were simply borrowing the money and that our children would eventually understand.
A few days later, while Daniel and Sarah were at work, George transferred almost the entire balance from their savings account.
$31,600.
That very evening, we left for our vacation.
We spent ten days at a beautiful hotel, relaxing beside the swimming pool and eating at expensive restaurants. George ordered everything he’d denied himself for years.
