I looked down at the steaming bowl.
My mother had spent thirty-eight years working as a waitress, and she always lived by one simple principle.
Nobody should leave her restaurant hungry.
For a moment, I imagined how happy she would have been to see Josie showing such compassion.
I was struggling to hold back tears when the kitchen door suddenly swung open.
Trevor Hollister, the general manager, marched toward my table with an angry expression.
Brittany followed closely behind him.
Trevor stopped beside my chair and pointed at me.
“What’s this supposed to be?”
Josie stepped forward.
“He came in asking for something to eat. I gave him some soup.”
Trevor glared at her.
“Did he pay?”
“I’m paying for his meal.”
Trevor laughed bitterly.
“Josie, how many times do I have to explain this? We’re running a restaurant, not a charity!”
“It’s just one meal, Trevor.”
