“These are adorable! What’s the story behind them?” she asked, pointing at the ghost cookies.
Madison blinked.
“Um…”
Karen immediately stepped forward.
“Well, they’re ghosts because Halloween is traditionally associated with ghosts.”
The woman waited for more.
Karen smiled.
An awkward silence followed.
Then a man pointed at a pumpkin cookie.
“Why does this pumpkin look so angry?”
Karen studied it as though she’d never seen a pumpkin before.
“It represents the emotional challenges pumpkins face during the harvesting season.”
The man pressed his lips together.
“That sounds rough for the pumpkin.”
“Very,” Karen replied solemnly.
I nearly choked on my lemonade.
Another customer pointed at the purple frosting.
“How did Madison get that beautiful color?”
“Fresh blueberries!” Karen announced.
Madison looked horrified.
“Mom, I don’t think—”
“Madison, sweetheart, let me handle this.”
A man picked up a chocolate bat.
“Dark chocolate or milk?”
“Milk, obviously,” Karen replied.
