The night before my wedding I heard my maid of honour through the hotel wall saying they'd pour wine on my dress and lose the rings. I recorded four minutes of it with my phone against the connecting door.

She rang me back in four minutes. Not texted. Rang.

She did not ask me what had happened and she did not ask me to explain myself. She asked three questions: did I need the room on a different floor, did I need the key cards on the original room deactivated, and was anybody in that building unsafe.

That last one is the question and she asked it properly, and when I said no, she said all right and did the rest in about nine minutes.

I wrote to her employer in the April. Not a complaint form — an actual letter, to a named person, because the online thing only lets you pick from a list.

She has since told me she had it framed by her team, which I think was a joke.
PART 3 — THE FOURTEENTH OF NOVEMBER

We went away on the Sunday and I did not say anything to Jory until the Tuesday night, in a rented place at Ardmere with the sea about four hundred yards away.
