Part 2: I had surgery to restore my sight after 20 years of blindness, even though my husband begged me not to — the moment I opened my eyes and saw him, I finally understood why.

"The documents refer to family follow-up assessments."

I stared at him.

"And who authorized those assessments?"

He scrolled to the bottom.

A signature appeared.

NIGEL ROWAN, MD.

My husband.

I left the hospital and drove with my mother to our family home.

I was not allowed to drive myself yet, but I refused to remain in the hospital while my children's names sat inside those records.

Nigel's car was in the driveway.

He opened the door before we reached it.

"Sarah."

I walked past him.

"Where are the children?"

"At your parents' house. They're safe."

I turned.

"Safe from whom?"

He looked exhausted.

"Sarah, please."

I held up the research documents.

"Both their names are here."

His face went pale.

"Where did you get those?"

"Dr. Harris."

Nigel stared at the papers.

Then he whispered:

"He wasn't supposed to have access to that."

I felt my heart stop.

"What?"

He shook his head.
