Part 2: I had surgery to restore my sight after 20 years of blindness, even though my husband begged me not to — the moment I opened my eyes and saw him, I finally understood why.

I stared at Harris.

"She's still working there?"

"Yes."

"And she examined my daughter?"

"Apparently."

I felt sick.

Dr. Harris opened another file.

"There's something else. The institute maintains a private registry of patients and family members connected to the original research."

My heart began pounding.

"Am I on it?"

"Yes."

He turned the screen.

My name appeared beside an old patient number.

LUMEN-004.

Beneath it was a recent entry.

LILY ROWAN.

My daughter.

I gripped the table.

"Why is her name there?"

"We don't know yet."

Then he scrolled farther.

Another name appeared.

BENJAMIN ROWAN.

My son.

Both my children.

Both listed in a registry connected to the experimental program that had stolen my sight.

I felt tears running down my face.

"Dr. Harris, what have they done to my children?"

He looked at me.

"I don't have evidence that they've harmed them."

"Then why are they listed?"

He hesitated.
