"Is Elliot her son?"
Ryan didn't answer.
"And Dawson's?"
Another silence.
Finally, he whispered, "Claire, it's complicated."
I almost laughed.
"Four years of pretending a child is dead? That's not complicated. That's monstrous."
His voice rose.
"You don't understand what happened."
"Then explain."
He was silent.
Then he said something that made my stomach turn.
"I love Megan."
For a moment, I couldn't breathe.
There it was.
Not a mistake.
Not a drunken kiss.
Not an affair that began yesterday.
Love.
A life he'd chosen while pretending to share one with me.
"How long?" I whispered.
He hesitated.
"Six years."
My knees weakened.
Six years.
Our son Sam had been two.
Lucy was five.
Six years of school concerts.
Family vacations.
Anniversaries.
Birthday cakes.
Six years of watching Ryan kiss me goodnight while he was building another family.
I pressed a hand against the window.
"And Elliot?"
Ryan's voice broke.
