Part 2: Before my husband passed away, he asked me to deliver a sealed letter to a woman I'd never met — after she read the first line, she looked at me and asked, "Did he tell you everything?"

My hands went numb.

I looked at Catherine.

Then Emily.

Then Julia.

For twenty-nine years, I'd believed Zane was the only person who knew about the exchange.

But my mother had been there.

She'd helped arrange it.

And apparently, she'd known why.

Then the front door opened.

Zane stepped inside.

His face looked exhausted.

He stared at the photograph in my hands.

And went completely white.

"Mara..."

I couldn't speak.

He looked toward Emily.

Then Julia.

Finally, his eyes met mine.

"There's something you need to understand about that photograph."

My heart pounded.

"What?"

He swallowed.

"The woman standing beside Rebecca wasn't there to help Voss."

I stared at him.

"Then why was my mother there?"

Zane began crying.

"Because she'd found out what he was planning to do to you."

My stomach tightened.

"What was he planning?"

He looked toward the two young women.

His voice broke.

"The baby exchange wasn't the beginning, Mara."
