I couldn't breathe.
"Then what was?"
Zane slowly reached into his coat.
And removed a small envelope.
Inside was an old photograph of me.
I was nineteen.
Standing outside Cedar Vale Maternity Home.
Beside me was Rebecca.
She was only a child.
And between us stood Dr. Adrian Voss.
I stared at it.
"That's impossible."
Zane shook his head.
"You met Rebecca long before Henry's accident."
My hands began shaking.
"No."
He looked devastated.
"You tried to help her escape."
The room went silent.
I couldn't breathe.
Then Zane whispered:
"And Voss made sure you forgot."
I stared at the photograph.
The old maternity home.
Rebecca.
My mother.
The missing years.
Everything seemed to shift beneath me.
Then Catherine's phone rang.
She answered.
For several seconds, she listened without speaking.
Her face drained of color.
"Detective?"
My heartbeat quickened.
She slowly lowered the phone.
Then looked at Zane.
"Dr. Voss has been found."
