I swallowed.
"Did he know she was expecting Emily?"
"According to Louise, yes."
My hands began shaking.
"Then he lied to me."
Sarah didn't answer.
I looked toward the photograph of my husband on Catherine's mantel.
He stood beside Emily at her college graduation.
Smiling.
Proud.
I had always thought his devotion came from the love of a father who'd raised a child.
Now I wondered whether it came from something he'd known all along.

That evening, I found another envelope in the documents Catherine had given me.
It was addressed to Zane.
The handwriting belonged to Henry Hale.
Catherine's husband.
The man who died on the highway thirty-two years earlier.
I opened it carefully.
*Zane,*
*I know you've been helping Rebecca.*
*I know you've seen her.*
*If anything happens to me, promise you'll get her out of that place.*
My heart pounded.
I continued.
*I have evidence that Voss is taking children from young mothers and arranging false placements.*
