Part 2: Before my husband passed away, he asked me to deliver a sealed letter to a woman I'd never met — after she read the first line, she looked at me and asked, "Did he tell you everything?"

"What information?"

"Her name is Louise Grant. She worked as a nurse there when Emily and Julia were born."

My hands began shaking.

"And?"

"She says the exchange was arranged by Dr. Voss."

I closed my eyes.

"Why?"

Sarah hesitated.

"According to Louise, Voss was involved in placing children born to vulnerable young women with selected families. He also used those placements to exert control over people who knew about the operation."

I thought of Rebecca.

A missing teenager.

A young mother.

A woman whose daughter had been taken from her.

"And Zane?"

Sarah was silent.

Then she said, "Louise remembers him."

My stomach tightened.

"What did she say?"

"That he visited Rebecca repeatedly during her pregnancy."

I stopped breathing.

"What?"

Sarah continued.

"She says he brought food, clothing, and money."

I stared at the wall.

Zane.

My husband.

Visiting Rebecca while she was pregnant.

Months before my delivery.

Months before the baby exchange.
