Elaine quickly pulled the sheet around herself. “Keep your voice down! You’ll wake the neighbors!”
“Oh, trust me, that’s the least of your problems.”
Elaine tried to explain that she’d only been checking on the decorations.
“In a bedsheet? At midnight?”
“Something was coming to get him!”
She huffed. “Oh, don’t be so dramatic. It’s Halloween! I was just having a little fun.”
“He’s been terrified for three nights! He thought something was coming to get him!”
“Well, perhaps he shouldn’t be decorating the house with ghosts and monsters if he’s so easily frightened.”
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. “Why would you do this?”
“You can’t be serious.”
Elaine looked toward her own yard.
“Have you seen what people are saying about his decorations?”
I frowned. “What people?”
“The neighborhood group! Everyone’s talking about how charming his little homemade decorations are. Someone even said he deserves to win the contest!”
