I immediately began recording.
I leaned forward.
A tall figure draped in a white sheet stepped into our yard.
My heart started pounding.
The figure paused beside the cardboard ghost, then slowly approached Owen’s bedroom window.
I immediately began recording.
The ghost jumped.
Whoever it was knew exactly where Owen slept.
The figure raised one hand toward the glass. Before it could knock, I flipped on the porch light and threw open the front door.
“HEY! WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU’RE DOING?”
The ghost jumped. It turned to run, but stepped on the bottom of its sheet and stumbled.
I flipped on the porch light.
The fabric slipped off its head.
I nearly dropped my phone.
“ELAINE?!”
My mother-in-law stood frozen beside the flowerbed, wearing her usual pink slippers.
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
“You’ll wake the neighbors!”
Then I pointed toward Owen’s window. “You’ve been frightening your own grandson?”
