And for the first time that evening, I was actually looking forward to Halloween.
The next morning, I sat down with Owen and told him the truth.
“Grandma was the ghost?”
He stared at me in disbelief.
“But she said she was helping me!”
“Won’t Grandma get mad?”
“I know, sweetheart. And what she did was very wrong.”
“Why would she want to scare me?”
I explained that Elaine was upset about the decorating contest.
Owen looked down at his hands. “But I wasn’t trying to beat her. I just wanted people to see what I made.”
My heart broke a little.
“I have an idea.”
“I know. And you’re going to put those decorations back up. Every single one.”
He hesitated. “Won’t Grandma get mad?”
I smiled. “Probably. But I have an idea.”
I leaned closer.
“Owen, have I ever told you what I used to do on Halloween when I was your age?”
