I Was Standing Behind the Door When I Heard My 82-Year-Old Father Tell My 19-Year-Old Daughter, ‘Sit on My Lap, Just Like When You Were Little. Don’t Be Afraid. No One Will Ever Know What We’re Going to Do.’ When My Daughter Said, ‘Grandpa, Please Let Go of My Hand,’ I Burst Into the Room. What I Saw Made My Knees Buckle, and I Collapsed to the Floor

I felt ashamed of the terrible things I had imagined.

But my father gently stroked my hair.

“Don’t be ashamed, sweetheart. You’re a mother. You heard your daughter sounding frightened, and you came to protect her. I only regret that my secrets caused you both so much worry.”
That evening, the three of us sat together and listened to the old recordings.

In one of them, my father said:

“Mariam, today is your birthday. You still haven’t woken up. I brought you a cake. I know you can’t eat it, but I won’t blow out the candle. I’ll wait until you can blow it out yourself.”

I sobbed uncontrollably.

When the final recording ended, my father reached into the bottom of the suitcase and took out a tiny candle.

“This is that candle, sweetheart. I’ve kept it for thirty-five years.”

Lily placed the candle on a small cake.
