I Was Standing Behind the Door When I Heard My 82-Year-Old Father Tell My 19-Year-Old Daughter, ‘Sit on My Lap, Just Like When You Were Little. Don’t Be Afraid. No One Will Ever Know What We’re Going to Do.’ When My Daughter Said, ‘Grandpa, Please Let Go of My Hand,’ I Burst Into the Room. What I Saw Made My Knees Buckle, and I Collapsed to the Floor

I am 53 years old. My father is 82, and my only daughter, Lily, turned 19 just three months ago.

Until recently, I believed my father was the kindest grandfather in the world.

But over the past two months, strange things had been happening in our family.

It all started on Lily’s birthday.

That day, my father stared at her for a long moment before saying:

“You’ve finally grown up, sweetheart. I’ve been waiting nineteen years for this day.”

Everyone laughed.

Everyone except Lily.

Later that evening, I noticed my father slipping her a small piece of paper.

“Read it when you’re alone,” he whispered.

When I asked what he had given her, they both answered:

“Nothing important.”

But after that day, my daughter changed.

She began visiting her grandfather twice a week without telling me.
