I Was Standing Behind the Door When I Heard My 82-Year-Old Father Tell My 19-Year-Old Daughter, ‘Sit on My Lap, Just Like When You Were Little. Don’t Be Afraid. No One Will Ever Know What We’re Going to Do.’ When My Daughter Said, ‘Grandpa, Please Let Go of My Hand,’ I Burst Into the Room. What I Saw Made My Knees Buckle, and I Collapsed to the Floor

“Then why did you hide it from me?”

“Because Grandpa wanted to restore the old recordings and give them to you on your birthday,” Lily explained. “I’ve been helping him.”

I looked at my daughter.

“Then why did you say you were scared?”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because Grandpa cries in those recordings. Every day, he begged you to wake up. I couldn’t listen without crying myself.”

My father reached for the tape recorder.

“And today, I wanted to make one final video. Just like when Lily was little and used to sit on my lap.”

“Then why did you ask him to let go of your hand?” I asked my daughter.

Lily gave me a sad smile.

“Because Grandpa was trying to help me sit in the chair beside his wheelchair, but his hand started trembling. I was afraid he might hurt himself.”

I covered my face.
