I nearly dropped my phone.
“Where is my baby?”
My sister began sobbing even harder.
“That’s what frightens me the most.”
“TELL ME!”
“Your daughter is alive, Susan. And I know exactly where she is.”
At that moment, Emily came out of the bedroom.
“Mom, why are you crying?”
I quickly ended the call.
I looked at my daughter. Her brown eyes, her beautiful smile, the face I had kissed every single day for fifteen years.
Had all of it been a lie?
I didn’t sleep that night.
The next morning, I went to my sister’s house. She was already waiting for me, with an old yellow envelope lying on the table.
“Before you open this, there’s something you need to understand,” she said. “Mom was still alive back then. She was the one who arranged everything.”
“Arranged what?”
Linda pulled two hospital identification bracelets from the envelope.
