I wrote, “Look how much our little girl has grown!”
Just five minutes later, Linda called.
There was something strange about her voice.
“Susan, is Emily with you right now?”
“Yes. Why?”
“Can you go into another room? We need to talk.”
I stepped into the hallway.
“What happened?”
My sister started crying.
“Susan, I can’t keep this secret anymore. For fifteen years, I’ve been fighting with my conscience every single night.”
“What secret?”
She remained silent for a few seconds before saying words I would never forget.
“The day Emily was born, something happened at the hospital. We all lied to you.”
My heart started racing.
“Linda, what are you talking about?”
“Susan… Emily isn’t the baby you gave birth to.”
I laughed. I thought my sister was saying something ridiculous.
“Stop it. This isn’t funny.”
“I’m not joking. You were in serious condition after giving birth. For two days, you barely remembered anything. And when you regained consciousness, we gave you someone else’s baby.”
