One said, “Baby Susan.”
The other had a name I had never heard before.
“Baby Rebecca.”
“Who’s Rebecca?”
My sister lowered her head.
“The woman whose daughter you’ve been raising.”
My blood ran cold.
“And my daughter?”
Linda opened her phone and showed me a photograph of a girl who looked about fifteen years old.
The girl looked astonishingly like me.
The same eyes. The same smile. Even the same tiny mole on her left cheek.
“Her name is Sophia,” my sister whispered.
I could barely breathe.
But the most terrifying part was still to come.
When I asked how the babies had been switched, my sister suddenly answered,
“It wasn’t an accident, Susan. Mom was paid to do it.”
I froze.
“What money?”
“She was paid to give your baby to another family.”
At that moment, my sister’s phone rang.
A name appeared on the screen.
