I dressed like a homeless man and walked into my own restaurant to see how my employees treated people who couldn’t afford a decent meal. I expected some unfriendly attitudes and perhaps a few rude remarks. Instead, I uncovered something so alarming that I eventually had to contact the police

Trevor froze.

His confidence disappeared.

Josie stared at me.

“Wait. You’re Ray Medina?”

I removed my gray knitted cap.

“Hello, Josie. I’m very glad to meet you.”

Trevor turned and hurried back into the restaurant.

I followed.

When I reached the hostess desk, Brittany was holding the small black device.

Trevor was demanding that she give it to him.

“Brittany,” I said firmly, “put it on the counter.”

She looked between us.

“The police are coming,” I continued. “Don’t make this worse by hiding anything.”

Slowly, she placed the device beside the reservation tablet.

Right beneath my mother’s photograph.

Within minutes, police officers arrived.

And the real investigation began.

An officer took my statement while Josie sat nearby with an ice pack against her shoulder.

Hector emerged from the kitchen and looked stunned when he learned what had happened.

Trevor was taken aside for questioning.

Brittany began crying.
