I carried a baby for my sister and her husband, but the moment they saw the little girl, they broke down and said, “This is not the child we wanted.” Right then, I decided to teach them a lesson they would never forget.

Six months later, I stood inside the Franklin County Family Court holding tiny Daisy on my hip while the legal proceedings concluded. Both Samantha and Ronald had signed away every single parental right without offering a fight after their attorneys realized that contesting the case would publicly expose their attempted trust fund scheme.

The presiding judge looked down at the documents on her bench, then looked over her glasses at Daisy and me with a warm, empathetic smile. “This courtroom witnesses bitter custody battles every single week, but rarely do I see a case defined by such clear devotion on one side and complete abandonment on the other.”

With a firm stroke of her pen, the judge signed the final adoption decree into law. “Congratulations, Alison, she is now legally and officially your daughter.”

I wept tears of profound relief right there in the courtroom, holding Daisy tightly against my neck while she reached out to touch my wet cheeks with her tiny fingers.
