I carried a baby for my sister and her husband, but the moment they saw the little girl, they broke down and said, “This is not the child we wanted.” Right then, I decided to teach them a lesson they would never forget.

Samantha lifted her chin defensively, taking a large gulp of her wine. “We paid an absolute fortune to an offshore medical facility to ensure we were implanted with a male embryo, so that child simply does not deliver the financial return on the investment we made.”

I looked at my twin sister, but I could no longer recognize a single trace of the girl I had shared my childhood with. “You sold out your own child for a trust fund,” I whispered, tears of profound betrayal blurring my vision.

The tiny baby inside the carrier let out a soft noise, opening her dark, bright eyes to look directly up at my face. Looking down into her innocent eyes, any remaining doubts in my mind vanished instantly into thin air.

“Fine,” I said, my voice completely steadying. “I am keeping her.”

Samantha let out a short, mocking laugh that sounded utterly grotesque in the grand foyer. “You cannot possibly be serious, Alison! You already have grown teenagers, you are nearly forty years old, and you are honestly going to ruin your life starting over with a baby that is not even yours?”
