"That you couldn't live independently."
The room seemed to spin.
For years, my parents had insisted I was incapable of caring for myself.
Now Mom was telling me my father had arranged documents to support that claim.
"Why?"
She began crying.
"Because Grandma Ruth had left money for you."
I stopped breathing.
"What?"
"Your grandfather established a trust before he died. You were supposed to receive part of it when you turned twenty-one."
I stared at the wall.
"How much?"
My mother hesitated.
Then whispered, "Almost seven hundred thousand dollars."
My knees weakened.
Seven hundred thousand.
Money meant to give me a future.
Money I'd never heard about.
I gripped the phone.
"And Dad wanted it."
She began sobbing.
"Yes."
I closed my eyes.
The insurance payment.
The memorial donations.
The trust.
My father hadn't merely profited from my supposed death.
He'd used it to gain access to money that belonged to me.
