"What do you want?"
She began crying.
"To tell you I'm sorry."
I closed my eyes.
"That isn't enough."
"I know."
A long silence followed.
Then she whispered, "Your father is afraid you'll remember Nina."
My stomach tightened.
"I do remember her."
My mother began sobbing harder.
"No, sweetheart."
Her voice trembled.
"You remember the girl. But not what happened to her."
I gripped the phone.
"What happened?"
A pause.
Then she whispered something that made my blood run cold.
"You were there when she died."

I couldn't speak.
My mother continued.
"Stacey, Nina was trying to help you leave the hospital."
My heart hammered.
"Help me?"
"She'd discovered that some of your treatment records had been changed."
I stared at the floor.
"What records?"
My mother's voice became frightened.
"The ones your father had asked Dr. Byrne to prepare."
I covered my mouth.
"What did he want them to say?"
