I turned the page.
“Today Mommy came to the door. I called her, but Daddy took her away.”
My hands began shaking.
I turned to the final page.
There, in a child’s uneven handwriting, were the words:
“If Mommy ever finds this notebook, I want her to know I didn’t disappear. Daddy took me to a lady who promised that when I grew up, she would help me find Mommy.”
Tucked inside the back cover was an envelope.
Inside were an address and a photograph taken just three months earlier.
The photograph showed a woman around 50 years old.
She looked astonishingly like me.
On the back, someone had written:
“Mommy, I found you. But Daddy told me that if I came near you, you would get sick again. Every Sunday, I come to your house and wait for the day you’ll finally come outside and recognize me.”
