That night, I couldn’t sleep.
But the following morning, another memory returned.
I saw the basement of our old house.
A locked door.
And little Emily on the other side, desperately crying:
“Mommy, please open the door! I’m scared!”
Suddenly, I realized something was terribly wrong with Robert’s story.
If our daughter had simply disappeared, why did I remember her being locked in our basement?
The next day, when Robert went grocery shopping, I went downstairs.
I hadn’t entered that basement in years.
Behind an old wooden cabinet, I discovered a small door.
It was secured with a rusty padlock.
But the lock was so old that I managed to break it open with a tool.
Inside was a tiny room.
Children’s drawings covered the walls.
On a small table lay a dusty notebook.
I opened the first page.
It read:
“My name is Emily. I’m six years old. Daddy says Mommy is sick and can’t see me.”
