Chapter 2: A thirty-year-old man began regularly visiting my elderly neighbor. But one day, when I stepped inside her home, I discovered something terrifying.

“Did Agnes ever meet Alex?”

She frowned.

Then suddenly sat straighter.

“Oh, my goodness.”

“What?”

“I remember something.”

Her voice trembled.

“The first time Alex visited, he mentioned a song George used to play on the piano.”

I nodded.

“The one he said was your anniversary song?”

“Yes.”

“Maybe he saw it in an old photograph?”

Mrs. Wilson shook her head.

“No. George never played that song in public.”

She took a shaky breath.

“But Agnes knew it. She was with us on the night George proposed.”

I felt my stomach drop.

Someone had been feeding Alex intimate details of Mrs. Wilson's life.

Details that helped him gain her trust.

Details very few people knew.

And Agnes Vale was one of them.

The following morning, Detective Ortiz called with another development.

Gloria Bell had been located.

She was alive.

For weeks, her relatives had believed she was staying with a friend.
