Chapter 2: A thirty-year-old man began regularly visiting my elderly neighbor. But one day, when I stepped inside her home, I discovered something terrifying.

Instead, she'd been placed in a private care residence using documents bearing signatures her family disputed.

Investigators had arranged for independent advocates and medical professionals to assess her situation.

Her adult son was on his way to see her.

I breathed out shakily.

“Thank God.”

“But there's more,” Ortiz said.

My stomach tightened.

“What?”

“We found evidence that Alex used more than one identity when visiting the women.”

“Did he work for Marian?”

“Records show payments linked to Silver Hearth, though we're still examining who authorized them.”

I looked toward my mother's garden.

“What about the young man who came here?”

“His name is Caleb Marsh. We believe he was associated with the same organization.”

“Have you found him?”

“Not yet.”

I closed my eyes.

There were still people involved who hadn't been caught.

And my mother was still at risk.

Detective Ortiz continued.

“Emma, I want you and Ruth to avoid being alone at the house for now. We're coordinating protective measures while the investigation continues.”
