The Secret My Mother-in-Law Kept for Eight Months
For eight months, I cared for my mother-in-law, Diane, who had once told me I wasn’t good enough for her son, Nathan. After a terrible car accident, she couldn’t walk or speak, and I became her main caregiver while working and raising our seven-year-old son, Ben.
I was exhausted. Nathan helped with appointments and prescriptions, but most of Diane’s daily care fell on me.
One evening, Ben surprised me by saying, “Grandma told me your blue box is heavy.”
The box contained my late mother’s letters, photographs, and wedding necklace.
I asked how he knew about it.
“Grandma told me to bring it to her when you weren’t home,” he explained. “She talks and walks when you’re gone.”
I didn’t believe him at first. Diane hadn’t moved or spoken in months. But Ben insisted he’d seen her walking.
