I looked at the document again.

“Mother: Linda Elizabeth Miller.”

“Father: Daniel Miller.”

“Who is Daniel?” I barely managed to ask.

Linda sat down on the couch.

“He was my husband, Mary. And he died three months before Emily was born.”

I turned toward Robert.

“So Emily isn’t my daughter?”

Robert fell to his knees.

“Mary, you raised her. You are her mother.”

“Answer my question!”

He began to cry.

“Biologically… no.”

I felt as though I couldn’t breathe.

I remembered that year.

In 1991, I had gone through a difficult pregnancy. Complications arose during childbirth, and the doctors told me that my baby hadn’t survived.

I couldn’t remember much from those days.

A few weeks later, Robert had brought baby Emily home.

He told me that we had been given the opportunity to adopt a little girl whose mother couldn’t raise her.
