What About Blood Type A?

Blood type A has also attracted attention in scientific research.

Some studies have reported associations between blood type A and particular diseases, including certain cardiovascular conditions and some cancers.

But again, these are statistical associations, not predictions about an individual person's future.

If you have blood type A, it does not mean that you are destined to develop a particular disease.

Likewise, having type O doesn't mean that you are protected from illness.

Researchers use large populations to identify patterns. Those patterns can help scientists understand biology and identify potential risk factors, but they cannot determine exactly what will happen to one person.

This is one reason headlines about blood type and longevity can be misleading.


What About AB Blood?

AB is the least common of the four major ABO blood groups in many populations.

The answer is no—not based on current scientific evidence.

There isn't a reliable rule saying:

"If you have this blood type, you have the greatest chance of reaching 100."

Centenarians—people who reach 100 years of age—are a remarkably diverse group.

They can have different blood types, different diets, different lifestyles, different personalities, and different family histories.

Some have exercised throughout their lives. Others were never serious athletes.

Some followed very strict diets. Others enjoyed desserts and traditional comfort foods.

Some never smoked. Others may have smoked earlier in life and later changed their habits.

What these people demonstrate is that human longevity is complicated.

Genetics matter, but lifestyle, environment, medical care, socioeconomic conditions, social connections, and simple chance also play important roles.


Genetics Still Matter—But Not in the Way Viral Posts Suggest

Genetics clearly influence longevity.

If you have relatives who lived into their 90s or beyond, that may be encouraging. Certain genetic characteristics can influence how the body handles inflammation, cholesterol, metabolism, cellular repair, and other biological processes involved in aging.

Researchers have identified genetic variants that appear more frequently among exceptionally long-lived people.

But having "good longevity genes" does not guarantee a century of life.

Similarly, not having a particular longevity-associated gene does not prevent someone from reaching 100.

Genes interact with the environment.

Think of genetics as part of the starting equipment rather than a fixed expiration date.

Your daily habits still matter enormously.


The Lifestyle Factors That Matter More

If your goal is to increase your chances of reaching an advanced age in good health, focusing on your blood type is probably far less useful than focusing on the basics of healthy living.

1. Don't Smoke

Smoking is one of the clearest and most powerful preventable threats to health.

Tobacco exposure increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke, lung disease, and numerous cancers.

Quitting smoking can provide major health benefits at almost any age.

If you are looking for something that has a much stronger connection with longevity than your ABO blood group, this is an excellent place to start.
