Which Blood Type Is Most Likely to Reach 100? What Science Really Says About Blood Type and Longevity

The image circulating online makes a fascinating claim: one blood type supposedly has the highest probability of reaching 100 years old, according to science. With four familiar blood groups—A, B, AB, and O—it is tempting to believe that one of them gives people a natural advantage when it comes to living a century.

But the real story is more complicated.

Your blood type is an important biological characteristic. It can influence blood transfusions, pregnancy-related medical considerations, and susceptibility to certain diseases. Researchers have also found associations between ABO blood groups and some cardiovascular conditions, cancers, infections, and other health outcomes.

However, there is no strong scientific evidence showing that simply having blood type A, B, AB, or O means you are most likely to live to 100.

That distinction matters. An association between blood type and a particular disease is not the same thing as proof that blood type determines how long a person will live.

So, what does science actually tell us about blood type, aging, and longevity? And if blood type doesn't guarantee a long life, what factors really matter when you're hoping to stay healthy into your 80s, 90s, or even 100s?

The Four Main Blood Types

The ABO blood group system divides blood into four primary types:

  • A
  • B
  • AB
  • O

These types are determined by specific molecules, called antigens, found on the surface of red blood cells.

People with type A blood have A antigens, people with type B have B antigens, people with type AB have both, and people with type O have neither A nor B antigens.

There is also the Rh factor, which is why you may hear blood described as A-positive, O-negative, B-positive, and so forth.

These differences are extremely important in medicine because receiving incompatible blood can cause a dangerous immune reaction.

But blood type does much more than determine which blood you can safely receive.

Scientists have been studying whether the ABO system may also be connected with differences in disease risk.

And that's where the longevity discussion becomes interesting.


Does Blood Type O Have an Advantage?

Blood type O is sometimes described online as the "healthiest" blood type or the blood type associated with greater longevity.

There is a reason this idea continues to circulate.

Research has found that people with non-O blood types—A, B, or AB—can have somewhat different risks for certain cardiovascular and blood-clotting conditions compared with people who have type O blood.

One important biological difference involves proteins associated with blood clotting. On average, people with non-O blood types tend to have higher levels of certain clotting factors than people with type O blood.

This has been associated with differences in the risk of conditions such as venous thromboembolism.

But here's the important point:

Lower risk of one particular condition does not mean that type O automatically produces a longer lifespan.

A person's overall longevity is influenced by dozens, probably hundreds, of interacting factors.

Someone with type O blood can develop heart disease, cancer, diabetes, dementia, or other serious conditions. Likewise, someone with type A, B, or AB blood can live a very long and healthy life.

Blood type is only one small piece of the puzzle.
