Part 2: My son h.i.t me 30 times in front of his wife… so the next morning, while he sat in his office, I sold the house he thought was his.

"Malcolm says he knows."

I gripped the phone.

"Where?"

A long silence followed.

Then Trevor whispered:

"Mother, the other son was raised by Daniel Pierce's family."

My heart stopped.

Daniel.

My attorney.

The man who had spent years advising me.

The man who had helped arrange the River Oaks sale.

The man whose companies were connected to the missing six million.

I stared at Detective Grant.

She had gone pale.

Then Trevor said something that made every part of me turn cold.

"Mother, Daniel isn't the man who was supposed to inherit Cedarline."

I could barely speak.

"Then who?"

He took a shaky breath.

"His younger brother."

I stopped breathing.

Trevor continued:

"His name is Nathan Pierce."

I stared at the wall.

I'd heard that name before.

Years ago.

At a charity dinner.

Nathan Pierce had been introduced to me as the founder of a private investment firm.

He was charming.
