My heart pounded.
"What?"
He spoke through the door.
"A letter."
I couldn't breathe.
"Where?"
"With me."
I gripped my phone.
Then he said something that made my blood run cold.
"It's about Trevor."
For several seconds, I couldn't speak.
My son.
The child who had struck me.
The child Malcolm had manipulated.
The child Henry loved fiercely despite all his faults.
I stared at the door.
"What about Trevor?"
Daniel was silent.
Then he whispered:
"Henry knew Trevor wasn't going to inherit Cedarline."
My stomach tightened.
"Of course he wasn't. He left the company to me."
Daniel laughed softly.
"No, Gloria."
A pause.
"He left it to someone else."
I stared at the door.
"What?"
Daniel continued:
"Someone you never knew existed."
My hands shook.
Before I could respond, headlights appeared outside.
A police vehicle.
Then another.
Daniel turned.
For the first time, his expression changed.
He looked frightened.
