Part 2: I discovered my husband was having an affair with my best friend while we were all on the same airplane—and neither of them knew I was there. Instead of confronting them, I sent a small, beautifully wrapped gift to their seats.

Tears streamed down my face.

I thought of Dawson.

He had found his son after four years.

But in the same moment, I was terrified of losing mine.

Then my phone vibrated.

A photograph appeared.

Lucy and Sam stood in front of a private airplane.

Both wore backpacks.

Between them stood Elliot.

The little boy Dawson had just met.

I stared at the screen.

Ryan and Megan had brought all three children together.

Beneath the photograph was a message.

WE CAN STILL BE A FAMILY, CLAIRE. YOU JUST HAVE TO STOP FIGHTING.

My hands began shaking.

Then a second message arrived.

This one was from an unfamiliar number.

I WORK AT THE AIRPORT. THE CHILDREN ARE HERE.

A photograph followed.

Three passports lay on a counter.

Lucy Bennett.

Samuel Bennett.

And a third.

ELLIOT BENNETT.

My heart nearly stopped.

Elliot's surname had been changed on the travel document.

Not Mercer.
