Not fearlessly.
Honestly.
CHAPTER 7 — EMILY ASKED ME TO COME WITH HER WHEN SHE MET HER BIOLOGICAL FATHER. I SAID YES FOR A REASON ZANE NEVER UNDERSTOOD
Owen Pierce was alive.
Sixty.
Living in Georgia.
Married.
Two grown sons.
A respectable music-store owner.
That was the part Emily found hardest.
“He just got a life?”
she asked.
Rebecca nodded.
“Yes.”
“After what he did to you?”
“Yes.”
Reality rarely arranges itself into satisfying punishments.
Owen had been arrested decades earlier for assaulting another woman but served little time.
Later charges were dismissed.
He moved.
Rebuilt.
Whether he became a better man, I did not know.
Rebecca had never contacted him.
Catherine wanted nothing to do with him.
Neither did I.
Emily spent months deciding.
Then she told me:
“I want medical history.”
Reasonable.
“And I want to look at him once.”
Also reasonable.
“I don't want a relationship.”
“That can change later.”
