Part 2: Before my husband passed away, he asked me to deliver a sealed letter to a woman I'd never met — after she read the first line, she looked at me and asked, "Did he tell you everything?"

Henry.

The man who died in the highway accident thirty-two years ago.

The man who'd been searching for his missing daughter.

I leaned forward.

"What promise?"

Catherine whispered, "That he would never let the people who took Rebecca discover where her child went."

***

I left Catherine's house with copies of the documents.

Before getting into my car, I called my attorney, Rachel Kim.

She had helped settle my father's estate and handled several family matters over the years.

When I explained what I'd found, she was quiet for a long moment.

Then she said, "Mara, you need independent verification before drawing conclusions about anyone's biological identity."

I knew she was right.

But the records frightened me.

So did Zane's silence.

Rachel advised me to preserve the documents and request my own complete medical records from the hospital where Emily was born.

She also suggested that I speak with Emily before anyone made further decisions about her life.
