Part 2: Before my husband passed away, he asked me to deliver a sealed letter to a woman I'd never met — after she read the first line, she looked at me and asked, "Did he tell you everything?"

How Zane insisted I never look too closely at Emily's birth records.

How he told me the original hospital documents had been damaged.

How he changed the subject whenever I mentioned the hours after her delivery.

And how, every year on her birthday, he became strangely quiet.

I used to think he was remembering the frightening delivery.

Now I wondered whether he was remembering the decision he'd made afterward.

I looked at Catherine.

"Did Rebecca ever tell you who Emily's father was?"

She shook her head.

"Not clearly."

My heart tightened.

"What does that mean?"

"Rebecca's memories are fragmented. She's been trying to explain what happened, but some periods are difficult for her to recall."

Catherine wiped her eyes.

"Zane believed finding Emily might help her."

I stared at her.

"Then why hide it from me?"

She looked toward the photograph of her late husband.

"Because Zane made a promise to Henry."
