My Sister Adopted a Five-Year-Old Girl Who Looked Astonishingly Like Me. At First, Everyone Joked That She Must Be My Daughter. But Just Two Weeks After the Adoption, My Sister Came to My House in Tears and Said, “Sarah, I Found Out Who Emily’s Real Mother Is.”

“Jessica grew up with her father’s family. Linda became a mother very young, and they were separated for years.”

Helen wiped her tears.

“Eventually, Jessica came back. When Emily was born, Linda helped care for her. But Jessica became ill, and neither woman survived long enough to see Emily grow up.”

I stared toward the window.

The little girl with my red curls and green eyes wasn’t my daughter.

She was my biological sister’s granddaughter.

The resemblance wasn’t a coincidence.

Emily and I were family.

Mary suddenly wrapped her arms around me.

“Sarah, we thought there were only two of us. We had another sister all along.”

I began sobbing.

Not only because I’d lost Linda, but because she’d been standing beside me years earlier, loving me without my understanding why our connection felt so strong.

Helen then revealed one last detail.

“Linda asked me to find you. She wanted you to know you weren’t strangers. But I became ill, and by the time I recovered, I’d lost contact with everyone. When I heard Emily had been adopted, I finally reached out.”
