“Because there’s something Linda discovered about you.”
The room went silent.
“Linda was adopted when she was two,” Helen continued. “I’m not her biological mother.”
I stared at her.
“She spent years searching for her birth family. After meeting you, she noticed your extraordinary resemblance and started investigating.”
My heartbeat quickened.
“Investigating what?”
Helen’s eyes filled with tears.
“She discovered that you shared the same biological mother.”
I couldn’t breathe.
“Are you saying Linda was my sister?”
Helen nodded.
“Your biological half-sister.”
I sank into my chair.
All those afternoons we’d spent laughing together. All those times Linda had jokingly called me her sister.
She’d discovered the truth and never managed to tell me.
“But Emily?” I whispered. “How is she connected?”
Helen took both my hands.
“Emily’s biological mother was Jessica, Linda’s daughter.”
I shook my head.
“Linda never told me she had a daughter.”
