Claire’s eyes widened.
“You said they were gone.”
“I thought they were.”
“And now?”
“They’re worth enough to secure Noah’s future.”
I finally understood Bianca’s words.
Not his son’s future.
His brother’s son.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” I asked.
Adrian turned around.
“Because the shares lead back to Julian’s fraud. If the board discovered the connection before the acquisition closed, the deal could collapse.”
“That explains the company. It doesn’t explain me.”
His eyes met mine.
“No.”
“Why did you tell Claire our marriage was over?”
He looked at her, then at me.
“I was trying to keep the parts of my life separate.”
“That isn’t an answer.”
His shoulders lowered.
“Because every time I came home, I saw the life I had built with you. And every time I saw Noah, I remembered the life Julian lost.”
I waited.
