I thought my husband would be furious when he learned what our daughter’s first boyfriend had said to her. Instead, he calmly invited the boy to dinner. I couldn’t understand why until I saw his plan unfold.
I found our 15-year-old daughter, Emma, sitting in the bathroom with a razor in her hand.
“Mom, is it normal for girls to have so much hair on their arms?” she asked through tears.
When I asked why, she explained that her boyfriend, Tyler, had told her that her arms looked like a man’s and that she should shave them because he was embarrassed to hold her hand at school.
I was furious, but Emma begged me not to tell anyone. She was afraid Tyler would break up with her.
I gently took the razor away and reassured her that nothing was wrong with her arms. Still, I could tell she wasn’t convinced.
