But over the past three months, his behavior had started to worry me.
He frequently woke up in the middle of the night, went into the living room, and spent hours studying old maps.
Several times, I caught him examining photographs of forests on his computer.
Whenever I asked what he was looking for, he simply answered:
“Old memories, sweetheart.”
One evening, I accidentally overheard him talking on the phone.
“I’m certain it’s there,” he said. “If I don’t find it this time, I’ll have no choice but to confess everything to my wife.”
Then he fell silent for a long moment before adding:
“No. She doesn’t know what I buried there.”
Those words filled me with uneasiness. I had never heard Robert mention burying anything in a forest. But I decided not to ask.
Perhaps I had simply misunderstood.
Two weeks later, it was our thirtieth wedding anniversary. Robert suggested spending the day surrounded by nature.
